Costa Brava travel guide

This post is also available in: Bulgarian

Hello, my lovelies!

People say that once you see the charming small towns of Costa Brava, it is impossible not to come back! About a month and a half ago we visited Costa Brava for the very first time and Callela de Parafrugell made us fall in love with this beautiful and unspoiled coastline. This uniquely inspiring town made us realize that we are literally living next to one of the very few hidden European treasures and we decided to take advantage of this opportunity and explore the most of this Costa Brava beauty.

costa brava

The coastline, which stretches from a town called Blanes to the French border, offers a very interesting diversity of nature, amazing beaches and historical towns. Callela de Parafrugell had already set our expectations quite high, as it was stated to be one of the most beautiful places, so we had to choose very precisely which places would give us a unique and less touristy perspective on the amazing coastline. That’s why we chose to visit: Begur, Cala Sa Tuna, Fornells, Cala Aiguablava, Port Lligat and the gorgeous Cadaqués.

And this is how our trip began…We left with a car from Barcelona and we decided to stop by the very first towns of Costa Brava, mainly Blanes and LLoret de Mar. Unfortunately, they were not exactly what we were looking for, as they were quite busy, full of tourists and were way too altered by the tourism in general.

Begur

Nevertheless, once we reached Begur, we were captured by the distinctive Spanish atmosphere. It was a very cute town with narrow streets, filled with small ‘handmade’ shops and charming restaurants. The town was a mixture between the very specific Medieval Spanish architecture and what locals called “pueblos blancos” (white villages).

It is located on a very steep hill and although it is hard to reach its highest point, once the 360º view of beaches and endless sea horizon is revealed, it makes it all totally worth it. The next days we explored the town, enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and the charming cafés and restaurants, such as “Can Pol”, which had the cutest small gardens filled with flowers.

Cala Sa Tuna

Located only about 15 minutes’ drive from Begur, Cala Sa Tuna offers its visitors a completely different look of Costa Brava. This coastline area revealed a cute 80 meters long beach filled with colourful fishing boats, surrounded on each side by cliffs covered with amazingly beautiful white houses.

It is a very small place, so exploring it takes no more than an hour, but we loved it way too much to leave so soon and that’s why we decided to have lunch by the beach at this lovely restaurant called “Sa Tuna”.

Fornells

At this area we also visited a place called Fornells. It literally resembled a small French town with a cute marina and amazing views. The place was very tiny, but there were so many nice houses with small private ports and beautiful gardens and as there were some very nice boats on the port, we (more specifically my boyfriend) spent quite a bit of time exploring them.`

Cala Aiguablava

Right next to Fornells was Cala Aiguablava, which was famous for one of the best beaches in the area. The beach strip was definitely much bigger compared to the other 60-80 meters long beaches and it had an amazing clear blue shallow water, perfect to enjoy the sea in the super warm summer days. We went there to spend some beach time and I didn’t bring my camera, but I definitely recommend it, if you are in Fornells or even Begur and you are looking for a nice beach.

Cadaqués

We had to go back to Barcelona for a few days, but we couldn’t resist coming back to Costa Brava and this time we decided to go to the northern part of the coastline, most precisely to Cadaqués. I was already in love with Costa Brava by now, but this place honestly left me speechless. It was one of the most beautiful places I have visited in my life and I am not even exaggerating. The all-white architecture was taken to another level and each and every house was a piece of art in a combination of different shades of blue and white. There were so many unique flowers on every house that it literally looked like taken out of a painting.

There were a few people on the streets and it was so well-preserved historically, which I am assuming was due to the fact that getting there is not very easy without a car and thus it managed to remain unspoiled and less touristy. It was so peaceful and nice that we spend hours just admiring the unique white blue architecture covered with colourful flowers. Even tough all of the houses there were more than charming, Casa Blava was literally the house of my dreams. I cannot even describe all the architectural details, but it sure inspired Walt Disney for the house in the movie ‘Lady and the Tramp’. It was amazing!!!

We were so captured by the atmosphere there that by the time we decided to go for lunch, all the recommended restaurants, such as “Compartir”, “El Balcon” and “El Barroco”, were already closed. Luckily, we found this cute family restaurant, called “Casa Nun”, which was right next to Casa Blava and had the best view of the town. We later had coffee, ice-cream and I was honestly looking for a reason not to leave this place, but unfortunately we had to…

Port Lligat

We then went to Port Lligat to visit The Portlligat Museum-House, which was the house of Salvador Dalí from 1930 to 1982. I guess Cadaqués was way too mesmerizing that we completely forgot about the working hours of the museum, so that by the time we got there it was already closed. We were pretty disappointed as it looked extremely beautiful and unique from the outside, but we weren’t lucky enough.

Costa Brava was definitely one of the most spectacular places we have visited in Spain and we would be coming back as soon as we can! I honestly fell in love with each and every bit of this coastline and Cadaqués for sure managed to steal my heart.

I truly recommend visiting some of these places when you have the opportunity. They are definitely worth it!
